A raw DNA data reader that keeps your genome on your phone
Most ways to explore raw DNA data start with an upload: send the file to a website, and trust whatever happens to it there. But a genome is the one file you can never change, revoke or re-issue — once copies of it sit on someone else's server, your control over it is a matter of their policy, not of physics.
DNA Is Mine takes the other route. It is an app, not an upload service: it reads raw DNA files directly on your iPhone, iPad or Mac, matches them against a research knowledge base stored in the app, and explains what it finds. This page explains what a raw DNA reader does, which files this one opens, and where its limits are.
What a raw DNA data reader does
A raw data file from a testing company is a table of measured markers — hundreds of thousands of rows, each with a marker ID, a location in the genome and your genotype. A reader parses that table, looks up the markers that research has studied, and turns them into readable findings: the gene involved, your genotype, what studies associate with it, and how strong that evidence is. The raw DNA data guide walks through what those findings can and cannot mean.
Why 'upload your genome' is the problem
An uploaded file can be stored, backed up, breached, subpoenaed or retained under a policy that changes after you agreed to it — and deletion becomes a promise you cannot verify. None of that requires the service to be careless; it is what copies on servers simply are. On-device reading removes the category entirely: with DNA Is Mine there is no DNA server to breach, because your file never leaves the hardware you own. The privacy guide describes the architecture, including the honest fine print about anonymous statistics.
Files and formats it reads
Format samples checked: 23andMe, AncestryDNA, MyHeritage, FamilyTreeDNA Family Finder and Living DNA autosomal exports. Genebox exports have also been verified with an actual file. WeGene exports still need verification, and not every vendor version is covered.
Import UTF-8 genotype text (.txt, .csv, .tsv), ZIP or gzip (.gz). Each row needs a marker ID, chromosome, position and genotype (or two allele columns). Password-protected archives, VCF, BAM, FASTQ and PDF reports are not supported. Available findings depend on the markers in your file. Step-by-step export instructions live in the 23andMe guide and the AncestryDNA guide.
What you get
- A full overview of your file, then 106 findings across traits (33), nutrition (32), sleep (10), fitness (5) and metabolism (26), drawn from 138 published papers.
- Evidence shown, not hidden: 72 findings rate strong on the app's confidence score, 22 moderate and 12 limited — each finding cites its studies, with links out to PubMed and doi.org.
- Ask My DNA: ask plain-language questions ('What does my DNA say about caffeine?') and get answers from your own findings, generated by Apple Intelligence entirely on your device.
- A fictional sample genome to explore before you import anything, and multiple local profiles you can delete at any time.
- Runs on iPhone and iPad (iOS / iPadOS 18 or later) and on Mac (macOS 15 or later, Apple silicon).
Free and Pro, honestly
The download is free, with no account. Free includes your full data overview, 13 complete findings and 3 Ask My DNA questions — enough to judge the report with your own data. Pro unlocks every finding and unlimited Ask My DNA, as a monthly or annual subscription or a one-time lifetime unlock; payments are processed by Apple, and your exact local price is shown in the App Store. There is no advertising and no cross-app tracking in either tier.

Do I need an account to use the reader?
No. There is no sign-up and nothing that links your genome to your identity. Purchases, if you choose Pro, are handled by Apple through the App Store.
Does it work offline?
Reading and analyzing your file happens entirely on your device, and your DNA is never transmitted anywhere. The app does count a few anonymous usage events — such as a screen opening or a plan being chosen — which contain no DNA, genotypes, findings or questions. That distinction is deliberate: DNA stays local, full stop; minor anonymous counters exist and are disclosed rather than hidden.
Which services' files can it read?
Format samples have been checked for 23andMe, AncestryDNA, MyHeritage, FamilyTreeDNA Family Finder and Living DNA autosomal exports, and Genebox exports have been verified with an actual file. WeGene exports still need verification, and not every vendor version is covered.
Can I try it before I find my file?
Yes. The app includes a fictional sample genome with a complete report, so you can explore every screen — findings, evidence and Ask My DNA — before importing a real file.
Is it iPhone only?
No. DNA Is Mine runs on iPhone and iPad with iOS / iPadOS 18 or later, and on Macs with Apple silicon running macOS 15 or later. Ask My DNA additionally needs iOS / iPadOS 26 or macOS 26, an eligible device and Apple Intelligence enabled in a supported language and region; it is not available in mainland China.
